Kick-Off Speech on video:  Part 1  |   Part 2  |  Part 3

A sincere welcome to my fellow citizens of Iowa!  Thank you for visiting my website to check-out the passion I have for running for governor of Iowa and working hard for you!

I don't consider myself a politician.  I am most proud to say I am a public servant and have been for three decades.  As governor, I will continue to view my position as still serving the people's interests and not that of my own.  I won't make a lot of promises because to do so just to get elected is what I have heard for years what voters don't like in political candidates.  If you can't keep the promise, then don't make it.

I want the voters of this state to know that I am a proponent of small, yet effective, government. Government is essential for so many reasons and for so many people, yet, all things considered, government should stay out of our lives and let individuals be in charge of their own destiny. So long as people conduct themselves by the rule of law then keeping government intrusion out of our personal lives should be held sacred.

I have been a public employee for all of my adult life.  I can assure voters, regardless of party affiliation, that front-line public employees are hard-workers.  I have seen many of them work at their finest across this great state at the local, county and state levels.  Every type of work, whether public or private employment, has their bad actors.  They are never representative of the majority.  Public employees work, raise their families, pay their taxes and spend their money in this state just like everyone else.  I believe public employees have received a "bad rap" by politicians who want to demonize the work of public servants as a drain on budgets.  The drain on budgets come from mismanagement at the top, a lack of vision and setting budget priorities. There is considerable spending in government that can be curbed without jeopardizing services and using public employees as the scapegoat for excuses of inefficiency. Therefore, I want all public employees in Iowa, especially state employees, to know that they WILL NOT have an adversary in a Governor Ray.  You will have my full support in conducting the necessary work for serving our constituents. It's also important for taxpayers to know they are getting what they're paying for and many, many taxpayers would be surprised their tax money is not being used effectively and for what many would expect as being fully funded, especially in critical public services.

I will be a law and order governor.  I have devoted 30 years to public safety service to the citizens of Iowa.  Our public safety servants, including law enforcement, fire, and EMS workers throughout all levels of Iowa government will have unprecedented support from their governor if I am elected. In short, I have been in the position to have your backs throughout my career and I will assure each of you that I will continue to stand with you and support you with every ounce of effort I can muster.  I want our public safety and law enforcement personnel in Iowa to be the best trained and equipped forces to protect all Iowans.

My campaign is one that will assure voters that their governor will serve with honor and integrity and, most of all, that I will be accountable for everything, including the bad. The buck will stop with me as your governor.  In my public safety career, I have answered many a call at 3 AM for emergencies.  The citizens of Iowa can rest easy knowing I am well-prepared to continue answering those urgent calls every hour of every day I serve you.

I have great hopes for our state and you will find on this website many initiatives and changes I would like to see for state government.  I will have some of the best and brightest people working for me should you elect me as your state's chief executive.  They will know they must be accountable, too, and I will hold them to that each and every day they serve all Iowans.

State government needs a serious make-over and I am the candidate with the experience and understanding of government to change these problems and make state government more responsible to each of you.

I would be deeply honored to have each of you stand with me as fellow Republicans, independents and even my Democratic friends to do what is right and fix what is broken and work toward common ground with the top priority of serving the people's business effectively, encouraging bi-partisanship, without political games and gridlock.

My campaign is not a campaign against anyone.  It is a campaign for everyone and trying to make government better, smarter and more efficient while still being effective and reliable to our constituents.  I have a vision of how we can make that happen and, with good people working alongside me, I believe we can accomplish great things for Iowans.

My campaign can only work if those who believe in a similar philosophy tell 20 people about my vision, and those people tell another 20, and so on.  I am blessed to know people all over this state and my goal is to get my message to every county over the next 10 months to make a difference.  It takes money to make a campaign work, so I also ask for your contributions to our campaign.  If regular, hard-working, Iowans desire positive change, we can raise enough money to beat any existing campaign war chests.  I need each of you to stand with me in that endeavor.

I will be the anti-establishment and anti-"good 'ol boy network" candidate in this election.  If elected, I shall serve as governor of, by and for ALL Iowans.

The Power of Positive Change begins with YOU!

May God Bless our great state and may He continue to bless the United States of America,

Steven P. Ray, GOP candidate for Governor of Iowa

The campaign for Steven P. Ray, GOP primary candidate for governor, releases the following statement:

“Steven Ray remains committed to fighting for every Iowan in seeking his nomination for governor. In speaking to Iowans across this state, it has become even more apparent to him that the people are not happy with the current leadership in either party in our state’s capitol. People are tired of the smelly old marsh that is the state’s capitol, much like they are tired of the garbage that comes out of the swamp that is Washington, D.C. Our state capitol is rife with personal political agendas, glad-handling and efforts by both parties to maintain political leverage at all costs, even at the expense of Iowa’s hard-working citizens. The Ray for Governor campaign hears the concerns from Republicans, Democrats and independent voters across the spectrum and believes both the current administration and Republican leadership, as well as the challenging Democratic candidates for governor, are all working off false assumptions in their hopes of winning the general election in 2018.

This state primary election on June 5, 2018, is vitally important to the future direction of Iowa. As governor, Mr. Ray would not be complacent in the need to prioritize the state’s budget to ensure taxpayers are getting the services they are paying for and expect. He would not plug the holes of budgetary shortfalls with reserves without tackling the real problems that are contributing to the lack of revenue in meeting budgetary expectations. As governor, Ray would not spend, or offer, millions of dollars in tax incentives when we don’t have enough money to support education, keep state law enforcement and public safety agencies at all government levels strong and able to be there to help Iowans and ensure our state human services have enough personnel to make absolutely certain children in need are being taken care of and are in safe and trusting care of others, whether by family or total strangers, when placed in emergency care. It takes an excellent government workforce to ensure these services are met and Mr. Ray knows that public employees are capable and willing to work hard if they have the resources to do it and he supports them 100%. He’s worked with them and knows they are committed to Iowans. These are not issues only held by Democrats or Republicans, they are common-sense issues and require a true leader to get them done, a leader who truly can be elected by a clear majority of Iowans regardless of their political party affiliation. Ray is the only candidate who can achieve this type of support in the general election of November 2018.

The media seems as if they wish to forget there is a primary and there is a lot of attention on specific candidates in this race. Mr. Ray has found out in his short time campaigning and speaking to real Iowans that the average voter is not concerned about who candidates are but what they can do for them and the future of Iowa. Current state elected officials, from senators to former Iowa government officials running for governor, including the current governor, are often seen as the problem, no matter what party they are aligned. Iowans want a leader independent enough to use common-sense and look across the entire political spectrum for the right approach to real problems facing Iowans. As governor, Ray will fix these problems in state government beholden to no one except for one agenda: doing what is right for ALL Iowans and putting them first.

Ray will reevaluate government efficiency from top-to-bottom, reduce waste, align management statewide to be more efficient and not top-heavy; ramp-up areas in government that need priority services such as public safety, human services, education and fixing our ailing infrastructure. He will do this without raising taxes but reprioritizing budgetary allocations. He will start with fresh new executive branch directors and agency heads and will hire the best and brightest staff in the governor’s office to get the job done right.

A true leader must work every day for the best interests of their constituents and not just for those they believe voted them into office. Every Iowan deserves a voice and a Governor Ray will work every day to ensure that is preserved. Iowans are tired of politicians running Iowa government in both political parties. As governor, Ray will put that aside while working to build consensus among both parties in a bipartisan fashion to achieve the goal of making the lives of Iowans greater than ever before. Ray believes strongly there is no current office holder, or candidate for governor, that has the experience, vision and verifiable leadership to build a better future for our state than he possesses. Steven Ray has nearly three decades of stellar public service to guide him as the “governor of the people.”
